Umi Bangkok

A friend and I enjoy an evening sushi omakase at Umi Bangkok (BKK) Gaysorn. We review the sushi course priced at 3800 baht.

Umi BKK is located in Gaysorn Tower, just opposite Central shopping centre. It sits on the second floor and funnily enough is less than 100 meters away from another Bangkok legend, Sushi Ginza Ichi.

Opened in 2014, Umi BKK has sister restaurants born out of Tokyo. I had been recommended this restaurant on several occasions by other sushi fans so was very excited to go.

The restaurant vibes are very traditional Japanese style, quiet, minimal and spacious. Divided by two rooms, each has a counter sitting roughly 8 pax and a chef dedicated to their space.

Omakase Sushi Course

3800 baht ($150SGD)

  • Akagai (red clam)
  • Bonito sashimi
  • Ankimo
  • Shirako
  • Ika
  • Buri
  • Kinmedai
  • Akami
  • Ootoro
  • Botan ebi
  • Uni gunkan
  • Mini ikura don
  • Anago
  • Black sesame ice cream

Of particular note was the shirako, creamy and bursting with salty freshness.

All ingredients were spectacular. The anago in particular charred just right.

The sushi rice (shari) had medium acidity.

Gaijin's review

  • Food quality: Great. Fresh air flown ingredients
  • Ambience: Modern, minimal, quiet
  • Value: Best value sushi for Bangkok (high-end)
  • Overall rating: ★★★★☆ (4.2/5)
  • Price: $$$

Umi BKK is a great and dependable sushi omakase. At this price point, it's an excellent choice for a lunch or dinner course. Very similar vibes to Sushi Ginza Ichi and the service/hospitality was equally on point.

Our chef was Thai but said he has been trained for over a decade in making sushi at high-end restaurants. He did an amazing job.

Having been to a few sushi omakases in Bangkok now, Umi BKK would rank near the top of the list. You could very easily take a sushi snob from Japan here and they would have a great experience with a very similar standard they are accustomed to back home.

While we haven't done the extended omakase course, I would imagine it being equally as good.

If you are hunting great quality nigiri in Bangkok – this is the place to go.
