Okay. This is a funny fucking film. Like, seriously, seriously funny.
First off, I have to admit: This was my life.
I am not ashamed to admit this. The gawky nerd who seems uncomfortable in every social situation? Me. The one who looks like he’s over-analyzing every conversation, trying to think of the right thing to say, and then failing to say anything? Me.
And Seth? The other guy? That was my friend Nate. Super charismatic. Crude. Funny as hell.
There is a plot, but the gist of it is: some unpopular geeks have what they consider to be a “shot at being popular” as long as they can score the booze for a party. Hijinks ensue.
This was my life. The only thing missing – the one thing that would have made this almost entirely biographical – is a game of Dungeons and Dragons in my parent’s basement. In fact, I can think of at least five evenings where we went about getting booze to go to someone’s house in the vain hope that we might make it with some girls who were waaaaay out of our league.
For me, at least, 90% of the humor comes with the acute ability to remember how awkward high school was and being able to laugh about it (now – a full 17 or 18 years later). It was both painful and joyful at the same time.
I highly recommend it.
