I remember walking down Clement St., in 1999, past the Coliseum theatre, which at that point had been closed for a decade. The entrances was boarded up, with big 8×4 sheets of plywood painted green. Someone had spray painted a poem on the boards, which was really more of a farewell to a departed loved one.

It was riveting to view. I’d never been to the theater when it was open, but I could feel the loss.

Wish I had had a camera to take a photo–developers bought the property not long after and turned the theater into condos. I think the ground floor is now a Walgreens.

I think you're being unfair by imputing realist intentions to Sunshine. The spiral away from reality (into madness ) as the movie progresses is clearly intentional... it's kind of the point. Let's think about works where mecha is used to good effect. (I assume you aren't counting The Iron Giant, because he's not really a mecha and it's a fantastic movie.) Aliens? Maybe if you count the tripods in War of the Worlds (the book)? Not much else that I can think of. They make good bosses in video games, though (and bad protagonists).

I think that you’d get on just fine with my partner. When we were in Saint Petersburg at the Hermitage, she burst into tears upon seeing the Van Goghs – much to the discomfort of the people who she was with. (Sadly, I wasn’t at the museum with her.)
